What injections or medication do you need to go to the Gambia as a tourist ?

What injections or medication do you need to go to the Gambia as a tourist ?

I fully agree with flamegirl. Unless you take a two-day tour up the river, you don't need to worry about malaria.

As for yellow fever, there is also not much need, but in the Banjul Airport, they sometimes run a little scam or two.
For example, handwritten signs will be put up stating there is a USD 5 (or EUR 5) visitor tax on tourists. At other times, a couple of serious-looking guys will claim to be doctors and deny you entry unless you have proof of vaccination ... or unless, of course, you pay them a small fee in their office.

The doctor is the best person to ask that...

Yellow Fever and Malaria I think but check with your doctor

yellow fever n malaria are definate you might need sleeping sickness.

My mum goes every year to Gambia for 3wk over Christmas.
You need lots of injections before you go along with a course of malaria tablets to take before you go & while you are there.

Malaria for sure! Go here:

You DON'T need yellow fever vaccinations UNLESS travelling from/through a country which has yellow fever. You should take malarial cover...Malarone. Chloroquine is not effective in the Gambia and Lariam has nasty side-effects. It's best to have typhoid, hepatitis A and polio too to be on the safe side.

Take jungle strength insect repellent...you'll need it.

Typhoid Vaccination recommended 10 days before travel

Hepatitis A Vaccination recommended 2 weeks before travel

Diphtheria Vaccination recommended 3 months before travel

Tuberculosis *Vaccination sometimes recommended 3 months before travel

Malaria recommendations

There is a significant risk of malaria in most parts of Africa south of the Sahara and appropriate preventive medicines are essential for visitors to this area. Adequate measures to avoid mosquito bites, such as nets and creams, are also essential.

Recommendations do change from time to time and it is important to discuss your personal requirements with your doctor.

yellow fever and malaria-my mums just been

I have been going to The Gambia for the last 10 years and even lived there for a year and I have only ever taken Malaria tablets. I don't think all the other injections are really neccessary but it wouldn't hurt if you decided to have them.
