Joshua Nkomo
black nationalist in Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia), who, as leader of the Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU), was Prime Minister Robert Mugabe's longtime rival.

The Zimbabwe African People's Union is a defunct, militant Communist organization and political party that fought for the national liberation of Zimbabwe from its founding in 1961 until it merged with the Zimbabwe African National Union in December 1987.[1]

Founded by Joshua Nkomo at the request of Joseph Msika, currently a Vice-President of Zimbabwe, ZAPU was banned in 1962 by the Rhodesian colonial government, and was later engaged in a guerrilla war against it. The armed wing of ZAPU, known as Zimbabwe People's Revolutionary Army (ZIPRA), is the only military establishment or movement which has hit an aeroplane by land mine in the world. Secondly after the Rhodesia military started bombing civilian targets in Mozambique and Zambia during the struggle for independence. ZIPRA also started shooting down civilian planes, which were at that point used to ferry military man power and equipment to the Rhodesian front. This forced the then Rhodesian administration to negotiate with PF to resolve the issue of freedom in Zimbabwe. By then, the white population could not move freely by road and air.

In December 1987 a Unity Accord was signed between the two parties; PF-ZAPU was merged into ZANU-PF, effectively establishing a one-party state dominated Robert Mugabe and ZANU-PF. Joshua Nkomo became one of two vice-presidents of Zimbabwe.

Nkomo, Joshua (1917鈥?9) Zimbabwean statesman, vice-president (1990鈥?9). In 1961, he became leader of ZAPU. In 1976, Nkomo and Robert Mugabe formed the Patriotic Front in opposition to Ian Smith's white-minority government in Rhodesia. In 1982, he was dismissed from Mugabe's government, but returned in 1988.
