What are some cultural differences between Turkey and the Middle East?

The Ottoman Empire ruled over Arabia, and the various countries of the Middle east have little respect for Turkey. Saudi Arabia won its independence from Turkey. The Ottomans did try and rule other religions and culture with some moderation, despite some serious shortcomings on that issue. I think the people are much freer and nicer than Arabia, but the new Islamic Government needs to be watched carefully.

There's a lot of freedom in Turkey that I don't think exists in Middle Eastern countries, especially concerning women. In the summer, you can see women in short shorts and halter tops walking arm-in-arm with their best friend, who is covered and wearing a headscarf. Althought 99% of people in Turkey are Muslim, Turkey is a secular country and people are free to practice their faith, whatever it may be. Women from modern families are generally well-educated and hold good jobs, attend universities, and better themselves. They are not covering themselves up and staying home, as the laws protect women here. That said, there's still a long way to go to make things equal in Turkey for all people, but it's happening and will change.

Istanbul is a very modern, European city and there are film festivals, art festivals, concerts every night, and a thriving nightlife. Tonight, I'm going to see a Blues Festival in Istanbul, and tomorrow stop by an animation festival being held at the Modern Art Museum. There's always something happening here and it's an incedibly lively, vibrant place.

Turks are not a Arabic or Iranian-speaking nation but a Turanic (Mongol) spaeking nation
