How did el salvador get its name?

How did el salvador get its name?

It was because the biggest saint for the dominant religion the catholic church is EL SALVADOR DEL MUNDO, the world麓s savior, althoug the original name for El Salvador, is CUZCATLAN, that is nahuatl for "the land of precious things".
I agree with the original name, El Salvador is the land of beautiful things, and when Miss Universe was celebrated in El Salvador, the organization gave the country the nick name, the LAND OF THE SMILES. el pais de las sonrisas. for all of the friendly and hospitable and kind people who lives there.

Why do i get THUMBS DOWN, when my response is not offensive? I don't get it....

I can only guess on this one. Since many Spanish settled in the area and were very religious they named it after a religous theme. ELSlavador must refer to Jesus, the saviour. Since most names of cities were named that way I think its possible that this was too

Pedro De Alvarado first tried to colonize El Salvador in 1524 and failed miserably. He was forced to retreat to Guatemala (who had already been colonized) and returned with re-enforcements in 1525 to colonize El Salvador in the name of Our Lord, the Savior.

It is he who named the country El Salvador.
