Why is Lake Orion in Michigan pronounced the way it is?

Lake Orion in Michigan is procounced

"Lake Or-e-un"

I would think it is supposed to be

"Lake O-ri-un" - like the constellation.

Anyone know why?

Back in the olden days (1830s), a couple of shady guys came from New York and built what would eventually become Lake Orion; however, they called it Lake Canadaqua. They built a mill to grind grain, streets, businesses and a bunch of houses.

It was great and they owned all the deeds to the property. So they went back to Upstate New York and sold parcels of land to their old neighbors. They made thousands of dollars for their efforts ... all looked great except for one thing.

The town didn't exist. It existed only on paper! In reality Lake Canadaqua was a swamp.

So, these new land owners got to the swamp and looked around and figured out they were swindled, most of them turned around and left, but a few stayed and eventually changed the name to Oreon Lake.

It took several years for the townspeople to get the name change paperwork together. Once all the "i"s were dotted, the petition finally got to Lansing to register the name change, in Lansing there was a guy named Nabis who couldn't read the writing so he changed the name to Lake Orion. Nabis just didn't tell anyone, so the Oreon men returned home and didn't figure out the difference for about 20 years.

Also, Bald Mountain ... was originally called Ball Mountain.

I live in Metro Detroit. It's just they way things are and is much more easier to pronounce the way it is now, it may not be named after the constellation but something/one else. Cadieux St. is pronounced "cad-jew (no disrespects to Jewish people, but I couldn't find any other pronouncation). Livernois is livernoise or livernoy. Detroit is funny when it comes to pronounciation.

The history here spans many cultures, judging by some landmarks, and street names. This region has been under various ruler for the past 300+ years. Indian, French, Canadian, American, British, American again to the great European migration of the early 20th Century. Those from the area don't think of it, especially when Michigan's largest city is supposed to be pronounced De-troi, because it s a french name meaning strait.
