How do Danish middle names for girls work?

I'm planning a short story, and I wanted one of the characters (who is female) to be Danish.

I was wondering how female Danish middle names worked -- can you just pick any Danish girl's name as a middle name, or do middle names have some kind of special structure to them (for example, girls always have their mother's first name as their middle name or something like that -- if you see what I mean)?

So can I just give her any female Danish name for her middle name? Or does it have some kind of structure?
Thanks for your time! :)

Although a family name is SOMETIMES used, both for boys and girls, in addition to the main surname (for example, my nephew is Benjamin Leegaard Mikkelsen, where Leegaard is a family name), this is not necessary.

You can pick any middle name.

Middle names are as a general rule free to choose. There is two variations:

1. As in the answer above the middle name is a 'second first name' where it is chosen absolutely without any limits - just like first names.

2. When the middle name is a 'second family name'. For example: My mothers middle name is 'Kr忙mer' so my parents decided to give that to me as a middle name. (It is equal to 'Kramer' in American). Kr忙mer was originally her mothers family name which she decided to pass on to her daughters as middle names. (All my cousins and I now use Kr忙mer instead of our real surname.)

Good luck on your short story. :o)

well Im danish and my parents gave me the middle name of lykke (joy) and it had no structure to it at all so basically u can just pick it by random.
