Goin to Jamaica? |
I am goin on a cruise to jamaica, if you have been there, would did you love most about it and what did u hate about it? Keep in mind its going to be in august... it better be hot so i can get a great tan! YA! i stayed in mandeville which is in the heart of jamaica. what i loved about it was the beaches like ochos rios and how i could drink anywhere. being that i was underage at the time... that was pretty sweet! juicy patties where like my favorite food along with their jerk chicken. the markets were a good place to shop and you can almost bargain down the prices of goods close to nothing. what i didnt like about jamaica.. was the beggers on the streets, the crazzy drivers, roads that werent paved all the way..( not good if you get car sick easly), lack of AC.. but overall i would go back... but this time around, id stay in either negril or montego bay. when you go cruising, they have shore excursions at every port. In Jamaica, I suggest Dunns River Falls. You climb the waterfall for about 750 feet. It is awesome. I would stick to a cruise sponsered excursion. The port we stopped at was Ocho Rios. we had no trip planned so we went to town. It was dirty and I really felt unsafe....there were people approaching us to sell drugs (keep in mind my hubby and I are in our 40's and we have our 70 year old mothers with us!) Well lets put it this way, I will never ever, visit Jamaica ever again. I've had really bad experiences there. I loved the fact that there was amazing snorkeling, and Dunn River Falls is amazing, BUT in order to get back to your ship from the Falls you have to go thru the flea market and its not a great place. The people hassle you, so you can buy something, the stuff is cheap, not well made, and the people will literally follow you, and when I was there, one man decided to grab a child, and drag them into their little store, just so the parents would buy something. The child was probably 8 or 9 years old, and the parents were playing tug of war, and the kid was scared to death. I felt so sorry for the girl. The security isnt the greatest, and there are alot of problems there, with rape, stealing, and tours. Its probably a better idea to go somewhere else. Its gotten really bad in the past few years, and especially in the Montego Bay area. Its amazingly beautiful but not tourist friendly. Both Ocho Rios and Montego Bay have Margaritaville!!! Yeah, it's fixin' to be damn hot in Jamaica in August!!! I have to agree with the other answers, Jamaica is a beautiful island, BUT is NOT tourist friendly. I have been there twice on a Carnival Cruise, once to Ochos Rios and once to Montego Bay. Both are not safe places for tourists. Ochos Rios - we did the Dunes River Falls excursion with the cruise. The falls are absolutely beautiful, but on the way back to the ship they bring you to a straw market where the people selling the items drag you and I mean DRAG you into their huts until you buy something. Also while at this straw market we(including my 90 year old grandmother) were approached to buy drugs. They don't care who you are, they just want to sell what they can. Montego Bay was the same way. Every tour offered by the ship takes you to these UNSAFE straw markets. I would NOT suggest doing a tour on your own either, my suggestion is find a different cruise itinerary. If you are not able to change itineraries, the best suggestion is to stay onboard the ship that day and enjoy the pools onboard, and the view of the beaches from the ship deck. Although it is beautiful, Jamaica is NOT a safe place, |
