What cruise line would be appropriate for a romantic getaway?

I'm planning a vacation for later this year and I was wondering what cruise line is the best for couples. We are looking for cruiselines that are not so much family oriented, because we are looking to get away from kids for a while. Also something that is relatively inexpensive. I KNOW all cruises are rather pricy, but just give me some ideas of where to start. I've never been on a cruise before and I'm clueless as to where to begin my search. Any suggestions?

I would go on Carnival, Holland, Princess or Norwegian cruise lines. They all offer different options for a romantic cruise.
With the ship be so big they have areas just for kids and areas just for adults.

All cruise lines are romantic. Princess is the line known for The Love Boat. Going during school time minimizes the kid problem.

I took my wife on a Caribbean cruise with Carnival. It was a great time, lots of activities, and not many children. Ice sculptures, dancing, gambling, was really a blast. I would recommend trying to find one that goes to Grand Bahama isle, instead of Nassau. Port Lucaya on the weekends is THE place to be. Nassau has nothing but a casino and locals with a really bad attitude, and is just dangerous. The criminals in the Bahamas get sent to Nassau. So unless you like to gamble in a huge way......
Just check with a few travel agencies, or if you can handle your own travel, check with the cruise lines directly. Just be sure to have a valid passport, or your cruise won't happen.....

It all depends on where you want to go. My wife and I have both gone with Royal Caribbean and Carnival. Both were equally great. Carnival did upgrade us to an oceanview since it was our anniversary and you do get past customer discounts through Carnival that you don't get with royal caribbean, plus the rooms are much bigger. If you can play with your time, I would maybe go with Royal Caribbean with Freedom or Mariner of the Seas for a 7 night cruise which is the one with the ice rink (with ice shows) and the three wonderful side restaraunts as well as the dining room. But if you've never gone before and are a little nervous of getting seasick, start out with a shorter cruise. Royal Caribbean is a little more expensive but the service is A+. Don't go to Nassau. I hated it! Check out the prices on priceline.com's cruise section to get an idea. You could try Celebrity cruises also, but the pricing tends to be a lot higher.

If you want to avoid a family-oriented cruise, you MUST avoid summer, school holidays, and weekend cruises. During those times even the upscale cruise lines have kids onboard. Your best bet is to cruise in October, November, February or March. Prices will also be lower during this time.

Now, HAL is good for us because we like a more relaxing, laid-back vacation and we are very particular about service and food. But it's more expensive than, say, Carnival. Carnival is better if you like nightlife and a more active atmosphere. (But on Carnival you really, really need to avoid the school vacations or else there will be LOTS of kids.)

Celebrity and Holland America, both market more toward an older traveler, therefore you will find fewer children aboard.
