What is the difference between cancun and cancun-riveiera maya?

Cancun is like a Miami
And Riviera Maya is a Paradise.

Cancun consists of the hotel zone and downtown Cancun. The hotel zone is shaped like the number 7. Resorts, condo, restaurants, night clubs and shopping centers line the beach (Caribbean sea)and the Nichupte Lagoon. This area is also close to the airport. Across the waters a short distance is Isla Mujeres (island of the women) Cancun is a very touristy area. One resort after another lining the beach. Very Americanized

The Riviera Maya is south of Cancun (45 miles from Cancun airport) where you will find the areas of Playa Del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras, Akuamal, Puerto Morelos and
Tulum. And the island of Cozumel is a 45 minute ferry ride across the sea. This area has more mexican culture.

Playa del Carmen is busy and fun but on a smaller scale then Cancun.
As you travel south to the other areas it's quieter and less tourists.

Tulum (82 miles from Cancun) is where the Mayan Ruins (Chichen Itza) are.

Basically the difference is less people, less resorts, less of everything.

Both areas have beautiful beaches and great to vacation to)
