Safety tips for traveling to Mexico (Oasis Cancun)?

My bf and I (along with 3 other couples) just booked an all-inclusive trip to the Oasis All-Inclusive in Cancun. I heard that you shouldn't bring a laptop because the safes in the rooms aren't big enough to hold one, and to keep all cash or valuables in the safe. I also heard that it takes longer at the airport when leaving Mexico than arriving.

Does anyone have any safety or common-knowledge tips for us? We'd really like to bring our laptops and I don't know if we'll venture off the resort. I'm not sure what clubs or nightlife is close and I want to be safe.

I already booked my flights and hotel, so telling me not to go isn't an option. I am not asking anyone to tell me whether to go or not, I'm asking about travel safety and such. If you aren't going to actually provide any useful information, then take your stupid answers elsewhere.

Hello, I am an American woman living in Cancun Mexico...I feel safe walking down the street at all hours of the day or night.

I carry a laptop to work. I take public transportation from downtown where I live to the Hotel Zone.

I wear my "good" jewelry everywhere.

Number one safety tip...don't listen to people that don't live in the area because they don't have a clue!

Number two - when you go to the very safe clubs in the Hotel Zone which cater to Americans, Canadians and Europeans as in any club don't be foolish...use your common sense.

Number thee- Cancun is here for the tourism...you are taken care of!!!

Clubs- Bulldog, The City, Coco Bongo, Senor Frog's, Dady'o and many, many others all cater to tourist.

Your hotel is around Km16 and most of the clubs are around Km 9 just a bus or taxi ride away.

DONT GO!!!! is my safety tip. mexico is fulll of mexicans who try to steal your money and filtered water!!!!! PLUS your supporting a country who is tearing Americas economy to pieces!!!

when my older brother went down around tijuana as a marine, he was told not to leave his wallet in his back pocket because the people would slash the bottom of your pocket and follow you until it falls out. lots of people don't even realize their wallet is missing until it's way too late.

I have been to Cancun, and your lap top will definately not fit in the safe box. My dad stayed at the Grand Oasis and loved it.....but still safes anywher are small. I have traveled alot and there are no big safes. We have taken our lap top to, places but not to mexico. I think you will be safe though at any Oasis/ Grand Oasis Resort. Ummmm, unless you are going during spring break! Then no way! We are taking ours to the Dominican Republic with us for a awesome trip.....and I know there are no safes there that will fit a lap top.....sooooo.....lol....we shall see! Good luck! Hey, also, don't listen to that one girl.....mexixo is a beautiful country, and I would go back any time......we had a blast and no problems at all. Loved the trip and will go again! Just stay away from the sleezy places! Cancun is great, so is that whole coast, go and have fun! They aren't out to steal your money! It's a blast there! And also all the major hotels out there the water is SAFE, to drink. If your not sure, then just buy bottled water. I drank the water at the bar ect....and no problems at all. Don't worry, any travel angent will tell you the same thing! ok and another thing MOST people don't go to tijuana LOL thats a place to catch a BAD STD! Of course your looking for trouble there! LOL Sheeshhhhhhhhh And ms Bee, you don't even want to leave your wallet in your back pocket in Las Vegas.....now there is a place where theft runs wild in the casinos.....soooo many scams out there.

Dont worry as cancun is very safe...leave the laptop at home=you are on vacation...the resort will have a internet station for you if you need to check e-mail ....and yes put your cash and valuables in the safe as it is just like the usa if its out for the taking ..it will get taken...and take a taxi to the the clubs and have a great time....cancun is a fun place so enjoy and dont worry...

I stayed at the Oasis back in 2002, and I didn't even have a safe in my room,lol. If your going on vacation, why are u bringing a laptop anyway? Heres a good safety tip for you though, if you do the barhopping tour, don't try and walk back to the resort from the bars. My buddy and I did and got jumped,lol. Luckily we didn't have anything with us since it was already paid for. Its a great resort though, good food, great booze and a beatiful beach. Have fun.

i just came back from Cancun on Monday and i brought my laptop....granted it didn't fit in the safe but i did put it away every day....we usually had our room picked up so all the maid had to do was change towels and sheets...doesn't hurt to leave a few pasos for them too...other than that it is a pretty safe place...been there 7 times...you need to venture...there are so many places to go to have fun...do not get pasos at the airport....get them at the bank...actually Walmart had the best exchange rate when we were there 10.9....every restaurant you can imagine from us....also Senor Frogs which is fun....Carlos and Charlies....just don't go downtown at night....take the bus for 65 pasos....you will be safe...people are wonderful down there

the Oasis is the SPRING BREAKER hotel, lots of loud, rowdy, drunk teenagers!
