I'm thinking of moving to Brigton in May. I currently live in Hull (which i hate). Whats brighton like??

Brighton - Expensive? Niceplace to live? Lots of shops etc etc?

Brighton? gay is what Brighton is, fine if you are gay, not fine if you are straight!

IT SUCKS! ! ! ! ! !

It is awesome, partys every weekend, orgies every corner, hot chicks everywhere, corpses in every closet, free beer every thursday night, free taco night on Tuesdays, you will love it.

hull without the bridge

Compared to Hull?
Hugely expensive. No, I mean it, in every respect from property down to a bag of potatoes, it is hugely dear.
Nice place, well it's sunnier.
Shops? Lots of them, but see first answer.
Finally, it is full, crammed jammmed, overflowing, with the sons, daughters, grandsons and granddaughters of Arthur Daly. Expect to be taken for very many well intentioned rides.
Keep your wallet as well closed as us northerners are supposed to. In fact, pretend you are a Scot!!

It is a fun, cosmopolitan place with lots to do. The shops are great, the ones in "The Lanes" are really good. Warmer weather than you are used too and a beach. It is also very expensive and very difficult to park, residents parking permits are as rare as hen's teeth. My best friend moved from Brighton to Hove. Then to be able to afford a house he moved a few miles down the road to Shoreham. If you don't need to transport links to London, this is a good compromise. I live in Germany which is much better alltogether!

Well, it's my home town, so needless to say I like it. It's very cosmopolitan, diverse and tolerant (gay capital of UK still). It pretty much has everything you could want - stacks of restaurants and bars, traditional pubs, cafes, clubs, music venues, theatres, shops, the tacky but great pier and seafront, Marina, cinemas, lots of different types of residential areas. Tons of choice for vegetarians and vegans too!! A person answering a different question about Brighton mentioned "crusties with dogs on a string". Certainly about 10 years ago there was a huge problem with homelessness and you couldn't go 10 yards without being asked for "spare change". However, it's almost been eradicated (or certainly the visible side of it has). There are indeed many people of, shall we say, alternative lifestyles (they may live in a squat etc) who have dreadlocks and scruffy dogs but they certainly aren't a problem.
The only con really is the exorbitant property prices. A basic 1-bedroom flat about 15 minutes walk from the centre will set you back at least 拢130,000, and a studio flat to rent would be at least 拢500 a month if not more.
I could go on for hours about Brighton. I've lived here since I was a child, for over 30 years now and I love it. You get all kinds of people and as I said before, because of that, it's a very tolerant and laid back kind of place. I defy anyone not to enjoy it here!

Brighton is great . A small lively city full of Art and culture loads of clubs and live entertainment , shows and bands. Easy trains to London and good local buses with a 拢3 saver which you can travel in a large zone all day. Surrounding country side great for walking and cycle ling . South downs fantastic . I LOVE IT HERE.

anywhere has got to be better than hull, i live very near the bridge. brighton is a nice city but very very expensive, yes lots of shops up market trendy etc

You are going to have a bit of a shock when you move down here buddy, we dont sell pints of "heavy" and you pay 拢1.80 for a pint , its 拢3 here. Property, well i live in marina village and a house opposite me is on the market for 拢489,950 and thats 2 bedrooms. Plus you have the service charges 拢1500 a year and then the dreaded poll tax 2k a year. Saying that there are 1 bed studios you can buy for around 100k. You will find it nearly impossible to get shared accomodation as this is taken by students. To rent a flat you are looking at minimum 拢400 a month. Brighton is a nice place to live , there is always something going on somewhere, i would say it is a safe place to live , you get the hen/stag partys on weekends , but trouble is rare and quickly sorted out. Shops , my good lady says there are loads, but stay away from the laines if you live here as that is geared up for the tourists. The gay thing, my god the way people go on you would think that every bloke that lives here is gay. Well i have lived her 7 years and do not see any problem (this is the 21st century) with gay men/women. I have been to gay bars and not been bothered(WHY NOT AM I UGLY!!!...lol) so stupid comments by stu pid people just ignore it.

All in all Brighton is a great place, i highly advise you to get a job - or look at work prospects on the internet for brighton, check out accomodation , and dont think it a holiday 24/7. You dont want to end up selling the big issue do you !

Ignore most of the above answers.
Brighton has become the 'in' place to live.
It is the finest resort in the UK, perhaps even in Europe - but it needn't be expensive.

Property is half the price in Peacehaven, which is just 5 miles to the east of the centre of Brighton. There, you can buy a very nice detached 2/3 bedroom bungalow for around 拢240k upwards. Apartments are far cheaper. Try punching 'Flats for sale Peacehaven Sussex' into your search engine. (Google/Yahoo etc)

Yes, some pubs in Brighton do charge 拢3 a pint - so don't go to them.

I pay 拢1.70 in Wetherspoons in West Street Brighton which is right in the centre of town.

To the bloke who lives in peacehaven, last time i checked it was 9 miles to pikeyhaven! brighton is a cool place to live , there are flat shares for 80 quid a week , true not the cheapest in the world but there are lots of jobs around. My advice dont go to pikeyhaven the only thing there is the co-op and caravans!
