The question is actually, "What WAS the Third Reich?"

I agree - it should be What was the Third Reich?
The First Reich was the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation formed by Charlemagne in 800 and lasted until 1806 when Napoleon defeated the Austrians.
The Second Reich was the German Empire created by Bismarck in 1871 and lasting until the end of the First World War.
The Third Reich was Hitler's Nazi Germany as has already been said.
