assuming, that you are usa citizen its very easy for you. you don't need any visa. as you enter at german airport the just give you a stamp in your passport and you are fine for up to 90 days of stay. you are not allowed to work during this time. with that entry stamp in germany you can travel all over europe free, means you might want to see france or the austrian alps, ever been to rome or venice? just hop on a train or rent a car and go. your american drivers licence is accepted.

The interesting things is that US citizens generally have to submit their Visa application ***in Germany*** and in person. You enter on a 90 day tourist visa, then apply when you are there. See the previous government site for more information.

Hi, I have just answered your other question but I forgot to mention that if you go in June/July bear in mind that the soccer world cup takes place in Germany. Meaning, hotels are hard to find and expensive. Same for air fares.
