Will I be penalized if I break my air + hotel package for Las Vegas?

I purchased an air + hotel package for Vegas. I want to change my departure time. But Expedia wants to charge me $275 to change to an earlier flight. If I just book the flight on my own online it would only cost me $129 for the 1-way ticket. My question is鈥?.if I book this flight on my own will Expedia penalize me for doing this? I would be breaking my package by departing a few hours early for Vegas.

My friend this could be a recipe for a disaster. By trying to save some money (unfortunately a little bit too late), you may end up paying more than you bargained for in the first place.

The truth is I doubt seriously that anyone of us here can give you anything other than a "guess" as to what / if anything you can do to get out of this "contract" with Expedia.

That is why I suggest as I hope you have already done, and unfortunately not the answer you are looking for, that you call Expedia and speak with perhaps a supervisor, remember that "customer service" reps have a set of guidelines that they have to follow, so in order for you to have a chance, you need to be speaking with at least a person that can make those type of decisions.

You would have to check with Expedia. It would depend on whether or not you purchased a waiver/insurance (it may have been included in the package). Just call them up and ask them! That's the only way you'll know for sure...!

There may more than one issue here.

In most cases, it's the airline that sets the rules and charges for changing tickets, not the travel agent or the website. There may be nothing that Expedia can do about the $275 in fees.

It sounds like you are considering buying another outbound ticket rather than changing the original. If so, then you will create more problems for yourself by buying a second ticket.

If you have a discounted roundtrip ticket, then you cannot fly outbound on a new one-way ticket and return on your original discount roundtrip ticket. When you fail to show-up on your original outbound flight, the airline will cancel your return flight. Your original ticket will have no value and you will have to buy a new one-way ticket home at whatever the prevailing fare is. You cannot avoid this problem by canceling your original outbound flight in advance. The airline will not allow you to cancel your original outbound flight and then fly home on one-half of a roundtrip fare.

This has nothing to do with Expedia. It's airline policy. You would have the same problem even if you bought your original ticket from the airline.

I suggest that you investigate carefully before you do anything. You may accidentally cost yourself more time and money by trying to "save" some by buying a new ticket.
