My Nikon D40 camera was stolen on a bus to Agra, India on Dec 30, 2007. Is there any hope to track it?

Forget it.

There are hundreds of cemera of that make. and as you said the camera was stolen in the bus, God knows where that person was heading too.

your only hope is to somehow contact the Bus driver and check if you left in the bus.

you shuld have immdtly filed a police complaint

Immediately after you had noticed it might have been possible by local police or friends.

Now it would be easier and cheaper to buy a new one than to track it.
