How do I call from Mexico to US?

How exactly do you make a call from Acapulco to the US from a land phone?

I understand the country code for the US is "1." So I dial 001-area code-number? It's the first part I'm unsure of. Do you dial an additional "1" before the "001"?

001- 3 digit area code- the number

I go to Mexico once every year. I had a hard time calling back to the US. None of the phone cards you buy from the US will work down there to call home. My luck is when I use my credit card. It does cost a little more but at least I can call home. With the credit card, No, you don't have to dial 1, then the 001. And my guess is that you wouldn't have to do it calling direct. I hope this helps and I am going to watch this question, for I know too.
